Toyota
It’s time to let your customers shop from home!
Everyone knows the brand Toyota, but few know how innovative and forward-thinking their internal teams are. We were asked to come in and help them figure out how they would take the car buying to that 2:00 a.m. shopper at home. Not just car shopping, but car buying. How can I be online at home and purchase my next Toyota?
We worked through a variety of directions and did a lot of research leading up to even pushing the first pixel. Myself and a few others spent the first roughly six months of the project touring the US and interviewing dealers, owners, lookers, and anyone in between to know what they want out of the perfect car buying solution. It was VERY important to understand how the dealers thought about the OEM bringing online purchasing to Toyota.com as dealerships are not owned by the OEM so understanding how the two would work together was a massive undertaking.
After the research, we went into web and figured out how to get the web up to the basic needs to buy. We saw a huge play for mobile at the time, specifically tablet-based on the user research we had done.
With all of this, our goal was to build a demo for Toyota’s National Dealer Meeting in Vegas. After spending over 18 months between research and product development, we were ready for the demo. At this demo, we walked a few thousand people through the new buying process with a lot of positive feedback.
From this demo, our goal is to build out a road map to get this product to the world. It will take a long time, we knew that, but we also knew it needed to happen to keep Toyota moving forward.

Buying Power
With the goal of having the power to purchase at the hands of the customer, creating custom tablet, phone, and web experiences was a must and resulted in the OEM rethinking how they approached car sales.
